As one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Dallas is a must visit for tourists and runners alike! With the convergence of railroads to transport things like cotton and oil, the building of interstate highways and also an international airport, it is no surprise that Dallas saw the highest net migration in recent times. As a car filled city, runners have to carefully plan out their runs. Moreover, temperatures can skyrocket from May through to September so if you are planning to go our for a trail run, train for your first marathon or complete your first virtual 5k run in Dallas runs have to be wary, running maybe early in the mornings or late in the evening. Accessibility to trails is steadily improving due to the Dallas Public Transport (DART), which includes an efficient light rail and bus system to take you around. There is also a bike sharing system that lets you cover the nooks and crannies. Downtown Dallas is also home to some nice Museums, the largest Arts district in the US and some good barbeque and Tex-Mex cuisine. With so much ambiance, let’s see what running in Dallas has to offer!
1. Katy Trail
In downtown Dallas, a popular urban running trail is the Katy Trail, a beautiful 3.5-mile long route following the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad bed. With some scattered shade, a good view of the Dallas skyline and a Beer Garden beer run Dallas along the way, one can see why it is popular.
2. Santa Fe Trail
Another popular location for runnings planning to run in Dallas is the 5 mile Santa Fe Trail from Deep Ellum to White Rock Lake further East.
3. White Rock Lake Trail
The most sought after trail though is the White Rock Lake Trail, 5-7 miles from downtown Dallas. White Rock Lake is a beautiful 1200 acre reservoir surrounded by an enjoyable 9.6-mile perimeter running trail. There are also many spur-off trails from this one like the White Rock Creek Trail at the Lake’s north end, and a hilly residential trail on the Lake’s western side.
4. Trinity Trail System
Lastly, in the populated suburbs of Dallas, there are many routes frequented by runners like the Trinity Forest Trail at Lemmon Lake, the Trinity Trail system in Fort Worth and the Richardson Area that includes the Duck Creek Greenbelt and the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve.
Running in Dallas does not disappoint, with many hotels downtown providing access to the Katy Trail, Santa Fe, and the Trinity Greenbelt Trail. Running stores are no less, with running store Dallas chains like Luke’s Locker, RunOn and New Balance ready to help you get run ready. Luke’s Locker and RunOn, in fact, have extensive running programs of their own for the community that you could partake in. If you want to stay apprised of all programs in Dallas, best to become a member of clubs like the Dallas Running Club or Pano Placers.
For those that need a little competition in their runs, Dallas running events like the Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon, the Dallas marathon and the DRC Half Marathon organized by the Dallas running club are on offer.
